Educational Q&A

The verse highlights the ethical weight of truthful speech and inherited counsel: both a father's words and a worthy person's present testimony deserve reverence. It also shows that sincere praise (stotra) can elicit goodwill, but the response is framed as a responsible offer—“What should I do for you?”—implying that boons should be granted with discernment and honor.

Vaiśaṃpāyana narrates a moment where someone addresses Droṇa, acknowledging the importance of (1) Droṇa’s father’s prior statement and (2) Droṇa’s own words spoken here. Pleased by Droṇa’s hymn of praise, the speaker offers to fulfill Droṇa’s wish and asks him to state what he wants.
