Adhyāya 196: Droṇa’s Conciliatory Counsel and Karṇa’s Suspicion of Counsel (मन्त्र-नय-विवादः)
ददौ तस्यै स देवेशस्तं वरं प्रीतमानस: । पज्च ते पतयो भद्रे भविष्यन्तीति शंकर:,देवेश्वर भगवान् शंकर प्रसन्नचित्त होकर उसे वर देते हुए बोले--'भद्रे! तुम्हारे पाँच पति होंगे”
dadau tasyai sa deveśas taṁ varaṁ prītamānasaḥ | pañca te patayo bhadre bhaviṣyantīti śaṅkaraḥ ||
แล้วพระศังกร ผู้เป็นเจ้าแห่งเทพทั้งปวง ทรงยินดีในพระทัย ประทานพรนั้นแก่เธอและตรัสว่า—“โอ้สตรีผู้เป็นมงคล เจ้าจักมีสามีห้าคน”
व्यास उवाच
Earnest devotion can draw divine grace, yet the resulting boon may carry complex consequences; the tradition later situates such exceptional outcomes within a broader framework of dharma rather than mere personal preference.
Śiva (Śaṅkara), pleased, grants a boon to the woman and declares that she will have five husbands, foreshadowing the later polyandrous marriage central to the epic’s unfolding.
