Ādi Parva, Adhyāya 158 — Aṅgāraparṇa-saṃvāda and Gaṅgā-tīrtha Saṃghaṭṭa

Encounter at the Gaṅgā ford

samprekṣamāṇā putra te nānurūpam ivātmanaḥ | anarhavaśam āpannām imāṃ cāpi sutāṃ tava, brahman |

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights the ethical weight placed on guardianship and social honor: a parent’s standing is judged through the conduct and proper placement (worthy protection/marriage) of children. Public humiliation and perceived failure of dharma are presented as unbearable, showing how reputation and duty intertwine in the epic’s moral world.

A Brahmin speaker laments to another Brahmin (or venerable figure) that the son is not living up to the father’s stature and that the daughter has come under an unworthy man’s control. Shamed by arrogant people and deprived of former respect, the speaker declares an intention to abandon life.
