पाण्डोः श्राद्धं, सत्यवत्याः वनगमनम्, बाल्यस्पर्धा च

वास्यैकं तक्षतो बाहुं चन्दनेनैकमुक्षत: । नाकल्याणं न कल्याणं चिन्तयन्नुभयोस्तयो:,एक आदमी बसूलेसे मेरी एक बाँह काटता हो और दूसरा मेरी दूसरी बाँहपर चन्दन छिड़कता हो तो उन दोनोंमेंसे एकके अकल्याणका और दूसरेके कल्याणका चिन्तन नहीं करूँगा। जीने अथवा मरनेकी इच्छावाले मनुष्य जैसी चेष्टाएँ करते हैं, वैसी कोई चेष्टा मैं नहीं करूँगा। न जीवनका अभिनन्दन करूँगा, न मृत्युसे द्वेष

vāsy ekaṃ takṣato bāhuṃ candanenaikam ukṣataḥ | nākalyāṇaṃ na kalyāṇaṃ cintayann ubhayos tayoḥ ||

ไวศัมปายนะกล่าวว่า “หากคนหนึ่งใช้ขวานสับแขนข้างหนึ่งของเรา และอีกคนหนึ่งทาจันทน์ที่แขนอีกข้าง เราจะไม่คิดร้ายต่อผู้นั้น และไม่คิดลำเอียงเอ็นดูต่อผู้นี้”

Educational Q&A

The verse teaches samatā (even-mindedness): one should not base inner attitudes on whether others cause pain or offer comfort. Ethical steadiness is shown by refusing to cultivate hatred toward harm-doers or attachment toward benefactors, and by not being driven by craving for life or aversion to death.

Vaiśaṃpāyana reports a declaration of radical impartiality: the speaker imagines two people—one mutilating with an axe and another soothing with sandal-paste—and states that he will not form opposing judgments of ‘bad’ and ‘good’ toward them, maintaining the same inner balance even regarding life and death.
