Educational Q&A

The verse states a principle of dharma and prudence: accept a small, targeted sacrifice to protect a larger good—one may relinquish one individual for the welfare of the family, and even a whole family for the welfare of a village. It warns against allowing personal attachment to endanger the many.

Vaiśampāyana reports counsel given to the Kuru king Dhṛtarāṣṭra—associated with Vidura and respected brāhmaṇas—urging decisive action for the greater welfare. Dhṛtarāṣṭra, however, remains constrained by affection for his sons, and the narrative continues toward the rise of his hundred sons and the ensuing crisis for the Kuru line.
