(न हि जन्मप्रभृत्युक्ते मम किंचिदिहानूतम्‌ । यावत्‌ प्राणा प्रियन्ते वै मम देहं समाश्रिता: ।। तावन्न जनयिष्यामि पित्रे कन्यां प्रयच्छ मे । परित्यजाम्बहं राज्यं मैथुनं चापि सर्वश: ।। ऊर्ध्वरेता भविष्यामि दाश सत्यं ब्रवीमि ते ।) मैंने जन्मसे लेकर अबतक कोई झूठ बात नहीं कही है। जबतक मेरे शरीरमें प्राण रहेंगे, तबतक मैं संतान नहीं उत्पन्न करूँगा। तुम पिताजीके लिये अपनी कन्या दे दो। दाश! मैं राज्य तथा मैथुनका सर्वथा परित्याग करूँगा और ऊध्वरेता (नैप्ठिक ब्रह्मचारी) होकर रहूँगा--यह मैं तुमसे सत्य कहता हूँ। वैशम्पायन उवाच तस्य तदू वचन श्रुत्वा सम्प्रहृष्टतनूरुह: । ददानीत्येव तं दाशो धर्मात्मा प्रत्यभाषत,वैशम्पायनजी कहते हैं--देवव्रतका यह वचन सुनकर धर्मात्मा निषादराजके रोंगटे खड़े हो गये। उसने तुरंत उत्तर दिया--“मैं यह कन्या आपके पिताके लिये अवश्य देता हूँ"

na hi janmaprabhṛty ukte mama kiñcid ihānṛtam | yāvat prāṇā priyante vai mama dehaṃ samāśritāḥ || tāvan na janayiṣyāmi pitre kanyāṃ prayaccha me | parityajāmy ahaṃ rājyaṃ maithunaṃ cāpi sarvaśaḥ || ūrdhvaretā bhaviṣyāmi dāśa satyaṃ bravīmi te || vaiśampāyana uvāca | tasya tad u vācanaṃ śrutvā samprahṛṣṭa-tanūruhaḥ | dadānīty eva taṃ dāśo dharmātmā pratyabhāṣata ||

เทววรตะกล่าวว่า “ตั้งแต่เกิดมาจนบัดนี้ เราไม่เคยกล่าวเท็จเลย ตราบใดที่ลมหายใจยังสถิตอยู่ในกายนี้ ตราบนั้นเราจะไม่ให้กำเนิดบุตร ดังนั้น จงมอบธิดาของท่านแก่เราเพื่อบิดาของเราเถิด โอ้ชาวประมง เราสละราชสมบัติสิ้นเชิง และสละการร่วมสังวาสโดยสิ้นเชิง เราจักเป็นผู้มีพลังแห่งเชื้ออันหันขึ้น—เป็นพรหมจารีตลอดชีวิต นี่คือสัตย์ที่เรากล่าวแก่ท่าน” ไวศัมปายนะกล่าวว่า ครั้นได้ฟังถ้อยคำนั้น ราชาแห่งนิษาทผู้ทรงธรรมก็ปลาบปลื้มจนขนลุก เขาตอบทันทีว่า “ให้แน่ เราจะมอบธิดานี้เพื่อบิดาของท่าน”
