เพื่อทำลายพันธนะแห่งสังสาระ (ปาศะ) เพื่อส่องสว่างหนทางแห่งญาณอันนำสู่ความหลุดพ้น และเพื่อให้สำเร็จญาณรู้สภาวะตน (สวรูปญาณ) จึงทรงสอนโยคะปาศุปตะอันยิ่งใหญ่นี้
