bhavānūrdhvaṃ prayatnena gantumarhasi satvaram evaṃ vyāhṛtya viśvātmā svarūpamakarottadā
Suta Goswami (narrating an internal divine instruction attributed to Shiva/Viśvātmā in the Linga-manifestation episode)
It frames the Linga episode as a revelation of Pati (Shiva) who directs the seeker/deva to ascend beyond ordinary limits, and then discloses His own svarūpa—supporting Linga worship as devotion to the all-pervading Lord manifesting for grace.
Shiva is identified as Viśvātmā, the Universal Self, who can both command the upward quest (transcendence) and freely assume a manifested form—showing His sovereignty over concealment and revelation while remaining the supreme Pati.
The emphasis is on ūrdhva-gamana—an upward, concentrated striving akin to Pāśupata-oriented ascent (inner elevation beyond pāśa), implying disciplined effort and immediacy (satvaram) in the yogic pursuit of Shiva.
