daśavarṣasahasrāṇi dviguṇāni bṛhaspate viṣṇunā yodhito yuddhe tenāpi na ca sūditaḥ
โอ้พฤหัสบดี ตลอดสองหมื่นปี พระวิษณุได้รบกับเขาในสนามรบ แต่แม้โดยพระวิษณุเองเขาก็มิได้ถูกสังหาร
Suta Goswami (narrating the Linga Purana narrative to the sages; addressing/quoting with reference to Brihaspati as a figure in the episode)
It underscores that even the highest divine powers cannot overcome the Supreme principle (Pati); Linga worship centers on that transcendent Lord who is beyond ordinary victory and defeat.
By showing an unsurpassed, unkillable sovereignty, it points to Shiva-tattva as the supreme Pati—beyond the reach of limited agency and time-bound conflict, the ultimate ground of all divine functions.
Indirectly, it supports Pāśupata orientation: the yogin (pashu) turns from reliance on worldly or even celestial power toward surrender, mantra, and steadfast devotion to the Pati revealed through the Linga.
