A suffering soul (preta) narrating his own sinful act within the Garuda Purana dialogue framework (Vishnu instructing Garuda through illustrative accounts).

Concept: Sin begins as a mental impulse (pāpa-mati) before action; betrayal of trust is a grave karmic seed.

Vedantic Theme: Antaḥkaraṇa-vṛtti: the mind’s modification as the root of bondage; need for viveka and dama (self-control).

Application: Notice the first rise of harmful intention; interrupt it through pause, remembrance of dharma, and accountability before it becomes action.

Primary Rasa: bibhatsa

Secondary Rasa: bhayanaka

Type: travel setting (road/boat vicinity)

Related Themes: Garuda Purana moral exempla where mental intent (saṅkalpa) is counted in karma leading to post-mortem consequences (general internal thematic link).

FAQs

This verse highlights that sin can begin at the level of intention—when a cruel impulse arises in the mind—showing why inner restraint is central to karma.

By presenting a preta’s self-account of how wrongdoing begins, it connects mental cruelty and later suffering, reinforcing the Garuda Purana theme that karmic causes follow the soul beyond death.

Practice vigilance over thoughts during moments of opportunity and vulnerability; cultivate compassion and self-control so that harmful impulses do not mature into sinful actions.
