Kāliya-damana: Kṛṣṇa Subdues the Serpent and Purifies the Yamunā
atha vraje mahotpātās tri-vidhā hy ati-dāruṇāḥ utpetur bhuvi divy ātmany āsanna-bhaya-śaṁsinaḥ
According to Śrīla Śrīdhara Svāmī, the omens were as follows: on the earth there were disturbing tremors, in the sky there were meteors falling, and in the bodies of creatures there was shivering, as well as quivering of the left eye and other parts of the body. These omens announce imminent danger.
This verse states that in Vraja, three kinds of extremely dreadful portents appeared, serving as inauspicious signs foretelling imminent danger connected with the Lord’s upcoming pastime.
He introduces the narrative mood: before Kṛṣṇa’s encounter with Kāliya, ominous signs arise in Vraja, indicating that a serious threat is near and setting the stage for the Lord’s protective līlā.
When anxiety or warning signs arise, this verse encourages remembrance that the Lord remains the divine protector—prompting prayer, steadiness in bhakti, and taking practical steps without losing faith.
