Lord Agni (narrating the ritual/recitation framework to sage Vasiṣṭha, per the Agni Purana’s usual dialogue frame)
Vidya Category: {"primary_vidya":"Mantra","secondary_vidya":"Vyakarana","practical_application":"Managing name-lists, pairwise grouping, and handling recensional variants while preserving ritual sequence and correct mantra wording.","sutra_style":false}
Encyclopedic Reference: {"reference_type":"List","entry_title":"Paired Devatā-Groups and Variant Readings in Mantra-Nāma Enumeration","lookup_keywords":["lokagraha","vasu","dvāḥstha","sravantī","pāṭhabheda"],"quick_summary":"The worship-list is organized in pairs (dvaya-dvaya) across named groups; multiple manuscript readings exist for certain epithets, but the ritual proceeds by the stated order."}
Concept: Ritual knowledge includes correct enumeration and philological discernment; variant readings are acknowledged without collapsing the procedure.
Application: When encountering pāṭhabheda in a pūjā text, keep the functional unit (devatā/epithet and its placement) stable; choose the local recension consistently for the whole rite.
Khanda Section: Puja-vidhi / Mantra-nama-sankalana (Ritual worship; enumerations of divine names and mantra-variants)
Primary Rasa: adbhuta
Secondary Rasa: shanta
Visual Art Cues: {"scene_description":"A ritual manual page showing grouped deity-names in pairs with marginal notes indicating variant readings; the worshipper follows the earlier order while pointing to the list.","kerala_mural_prompt":"Kerala mural aesthetic, stylized manuscript folio with paired name-panels (Lokagraha, Vasu, Dvāḥstha, Sravantī), red-ochre background, scribe’s marginal variant notes, priest gesturing to the sequence.","tanjore_prompt":"Tanjore style, ornate altar with multiple small framed icons arranged in pairs, gold borders around each pair, a palm-leaf text open showing alternate readings, rich jewel tones.","mysore_prompt":"Mysore painting, instructional diagram: paired boxes labeled with deity-groups, arrows for pūrva-krama, side-notes for pāṭhabheda, clean composition and soft shading.","mughal_miniature_prompt":"Mughal miniature of a scholar-priest in a library-like ritual room, comparing two manuscripts, marginalia visible, small deity icons arranged in paired order on a carpeted platform."}
Audio Atmosphere: {"recitation_mood":"instructional","suggested_raga":"Kalyani","pace":"medium","voice_tone":"instructional"}
Sandhi Resolution Notes: Text contains manuscript/edition markers (ङ, ख, ग, घ, ज, छ) and variant readings; compounds segmented: लोकग्रहवसुद्वाःस्थस्रवन्तीनाम्; लोकग्रहवसुद्वाःस्थहस्तादीनाम्; भानुत्रयम् (dvigu).
Related Themes: Agni Purana 96 (name-enumerations; dvārapāla and protection context)
It teaches a practical recitation/worship method: certain named groups are to be taken “two-by-two,” and it preserves variant readings used across different manuscript traditions for correct ritual listing.
By cataloguing deity-groups and abstract categories (Sun triad, Yuga, Veda, Lakṣmī, Gaṇapati) and even recording textual variants, it functions like a ritual index plus a compact critical apparatus—typical of the Agni Purana’s compendious style.
Following the prescribed order and pair-wise enumeration is presented as ensuring correctness (śuddhi) in worship; accurate naming and sequence are traditionally held to stabilize the rite’s merit (puṇya) and intended results (siddhi).
