Vidya Category: {"primary_vidya":"Cosmology","secondary_vidya":"Philosophy","practical_application":"Elemental contemplation for ritual purity, meditation, and diagnostic mapping (qualities/functions) used across pūjā, yoga, and classical natural philosophy.","sutra_style":true}
Encyclopedic Reference: {"reference_type":"Definition","entry_title":"Pañcabhūta functional definitions (dhāraṇā, śuṣiratva, tejas=pāvaka, sparśa=vāyu)","lookup_keywords":["pañcabhūta","dharaṇī","ākāśa-śuṣira","tejas-pāvaka","vāyu-sparśa"],"quick_summary":"Defines elements by their characteristic function/quality: earth supports, ether is spatial hollowness, tejas is fire, and air is touch-bearing. Useful as a compact key for bhūta-based analysis in ritual and philosophy."}
Dosha: Tridosha
Concept: Knowing tattva through lakṣaṇa (defining marks): elements are grasped by their operative capacities and sensory correlates.
Application: Use these lakṣaṇas in meditation (bhūta-śuddhi), in interpreting ritual substances (earth/fire/air/space), and in philosophical discrimination of guṇa and dravya.
Khanda Section: Tattva-jnana / Panchabhuta-Nirupana (Cosmological Elements)
Primary Rasa: śānta
Secondary Rasa: adbhuta
Visual Art Cues: {"scene_description":"A schematic of the elements: earth as a supporting base, ether as an open space sphere, fire as radiant flame, air as flowing currents indicated by touch-lines.","kerala_mural_prompt":"Kerala mural, symbolic cosmology panel: earth as lotus-base supporting mountains, ākāśa as blue void with circular cavity motif, tejas as stylized flame, vāyu as swirling bands with tactile ripples, traditional palette and borders","tanjore_prompt":"Tanjore, four-element tableau with gold embossing: earth pedestal, ether dome with openwork, fire flame with gilded highlights, air as gold-swirled ribbons; icon-like symmetry","mysore_prompt":"Mysore painting, didactic diagram with neat labels in Devanagari, minimal figures, clear icons for dhāraṇā/śuṣira/tejas/sparśa, soft washes and fine outlines","mughal_miniature_prompt":"Mughal miniature, naturalistic landscape cross-section: solid ground supporting structures, open sky-space, campfire radiance, wind shown in flowing scarves and dust trails, fine detailing"}
Audio Atmosphere: {"recitation_mood":"contemplative","suggested_raga":"Yaman","pace":"slow","voice_tone":"contemplative"}
Sandhi Resolution Notes: धारणाद्धरणीं = धारणात् + धरणीम् (त् + ध → द्ध); शुषिरात्मकं = शुषिर-आत्मकम्; तेजस्तत् = तेजः + तत् (विसर्ग-संधि).
Related Themes: Agni Purana 61.21 (bhūta qualities in substances; śabda/sparśa); Agni Purana 61.22 (tanmātra–indriya mapping in ritual items)
It teaches a technical identification of the elements by their defining functions/qualities: earth by support (dhāraṇā), ether by spatial hollowness, fire as tejas/pāvaka, and air as the bearer of touch—useful for tattva-vicāra and element-based ritual/meditative classification.
By giving compact, quasi-sāṅkhya style definitions of the mahābhūtas, it shows the text’s encyclopedic reach beyond mythology into systematic philosophy and cosmological taxonomy used across ritual theory, yoga, and traditional sciences.
Discriminating the elements by their intrinsic marks supports right knowledge (viveka) and purification of understanding; such clarity is traditionally held to aid meditation on creation and the Self, reducing confusion (avidyā) that binds karma.
