pratipaddinamārabhya paurṇamāsyaṃtameva ca | pakṣaṃ pūrṇo hi yasmācca pūrṇimetyabhidhīyate

ప్రతిపద నుండి ప్రారంభమై పౌర్ణమి వరకు విస్తరించే పక్షం—ఆ పక్షం ‘పూర్ణ’మగుటచేత దానిని ‘పూర్ణిమ’ అని పిలుస్తారు.
