Shiva Form: Dakṣiṇāmūrti
Jyotirlinga: Viśvanātha
Sthala Purana: Kāśī/Viśveśvara is portrayed as the locus where Śiva grants tattva-jñāna and inner union; the lamp-garland (dīpamālā) symbolizes removal of avidyā and the dawning of knowledge by grace.
Significance: Dīpa-dāna at a Śiva-associated sacred locus is framed as leading to tattva-jñāna and ‘entering’ Mahādeva—i.e., deep interiorization culminating in liberation-oriented realization.
Role: teaching
Offering: dipa
It teaches that sincere lamp-offering (dīpa-dāna) performed with devotion becomes a means to tattva-jñāna—right understanding of reality—and culminates in inner absorption in Mahesha, the liberating Lord (Pati).
Lighting lamps is a classic upacāra of Saguna Shiva worship; by honoring Shiva’s presence through sacred symbols like the bilva (beloved to Shiva), the devotee’s mind becomes purified and fit for realizing Shiva beyond form.
Perform dīpa-dāna by arranging a line/garland of lamps at a bilva tree with reverence, ideally alongside Shiva-nāma or the Panchakshara mantra (Om Namaḥ Śivāya) as focused remembrance.
