Sukta 8.80

Devata

Indra

Inside Sukta 80

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

A stark confession of dependence: no other strong-maker or healer exists—Indra alone can restore and show mercy.

  2. Development

The prayer turns practical: bring the victory-chariot, remove what “stands around” as hindrance, and make the worshippers true conquerors.

  3. Climax

Indra is envisioned as the decisive power who makes victory possible and overturns obstruction—strength becomes actionable, not merely praised.

  4. Where it settles

The hymn closes with a wider divine cooperation (gods and goddesses increasing the light) and a final wish: praised bounty be fashioned, and the inspired, dawn-swift coming be realized.

The deity: Indra

  • In the VedaIndra is praised as Śatakratu (“of a hundred powers/acts”), the peerless maker of strength and the restorer who can heal and set things right. He is invoked as the decisive helper in contest, arriving in a victory-bearing chariot and granting rādhas (bounty, success, renown).
  • Cosmic functionHe upholds ṛta by breaking obstruction, releasing vitality and prosperity, and empowering the community to overcome hostile forces—outer and inner.
  • Inner significanceIndra symbolizes awakened will, courageous energy, and the capacity to overcome inertia, fear, and blockage; his “mercy” is the restoring force that reorders the mind and life toward clarity and victory.

The seer

  • Anukramaṇī-attributed seer: uncertain (Mandala 8 contains many Kāṇva/Pragātha attributions; this sukta’s r̥ṣi is not securely identified in the provided tradition). The hymn reflects the Mandala 8 style of direct, practical supplication to Indra—mercy (mṛḷaya), victory, and the removal of impediments—rather than a long mythic narrative.
