Sagara’s Boons, Progeny, and the Rise of the Sixty Thousand
ekā janayitā tāta putraṃ vaṃśakaraṃ tava | ṣaṣṭiṃ putrasahasrāṇi aparā janayiṣyati ||
O child, one wife will beget a son who will perpetuate your race and the other, sixty thousand sons, said Bhrugu.
Dynastic responsibility is framed as dharma: producing an heir (vaṃśakara) ensures social continuity, while the boon also sets up later consequences that test dharma in action.
Bhṛgu specifies the form Sagara’s boon will take: one wife bears one heir; the other bears sixty thousand sons.
Acceptance of divine ordinance with humility—Sagara receives a detailed boon that will shape future events.
