FAQs

The verse establishes the conflict between dharma (represented by the ascetics and Rama) and adharma (represented by Khara and the rakshasas). It illustrates how forces of unrighteousness threaten the peaceful practice of spirituality and the protection of the virtuous. The ascetic's warning foreshadows Rama's role as the defender of dharma against demonic forces.

An elderly ascetic warns Rama about the dangerous rakshasa Khara, who is Ravana's brother, dwelling in nearby Janasthana. The sage describes Khara's cruelty and his persecution of ascetics, indicating that Rama's presence in the forest may bring him into conflict with this powerful enemy who has already driven away the holy men from the region.

The verse emphasizes the virtue of vigilance and the responsibility of the righteous to protect the vulnerable. The ascetic's warning demonstrates concern for Rama's safety while also highlighting the need for a protector of dharma. It sets the stage for Rama to embody the role of the divine warrior who confronts and defeats evil forces.
