Concept: When struck by adversity, one should respond with charity proportionate to capacity (yathāśakti), transforming suffering into dharmic action.

Application: In difficult periods, practice ‘yathāśakti’ giving—support someone in need, donate responsibly, and keep commitments; let hardship soften the heart rather than harden it.

Primary Rasa: karuna

Secondary Rasa: shanta

FAQs

The verse recommends dāna (charitable giving): a black cow, black cloth, gold according to one’s means, and also a nīlamaṇi (blue gem).

It frames charity as an ethical act proportional to one’s resources, prioritizing sincerity and responsibility over hardship-inducing display.

Even in adversity, one should respond through generosity and restraint—transforming personal difficulty into compassionate giving rather than fear or superstition.
