The Kṛttikās

Concept: Righteous guardianship (pālana) and shared responsibility sanctify kinship beyond biology.

Application: Adopt a ‘protector’ mindset in family/community: mentor the young, share caregiving, and measure success by character (vṛtti/sadācāra) rather than status.

Primary Rasa: shringara

Secondary Rasa: shanta

Visual Art Cues: {"scene_description":"A circle of radiant Kṛttikā mothers, star-crowned and gentle-eyed, lean toward Girijā with hands raised in blessing, pledging to care for the child-to-be. FAQs

The speakers are the Kṛttikās. They express their intention to care for the child to be born from the beloved’s womb and ask that he be regarded as their son too—one who will protect them and live with proper conduct.

vṛttimān literally means “possessing vṛtti,” i.e., good conduct, proper livelihood, or disciplined behavior. In context it praises the future child as ethically grounded and dependable.

The verse highlights communal responsibility and righteous upbringing: caring for a child, claiming protective kinship, and valuing dharmic conduct as the foundation of a worthy protector.
