FAQs

It refers to an ascetic discipline of sleeping on the bare ground (without a bed), used as a bodily restraint to cultivate simplicity and self-control.

It indicates that when a disciplined person undertakes specific restraints (niyama) with deliberate commitment, those restraints function as formal vows (vrata) as well.

Ethical and spiritual progress is framed as arising from voluntary self-regulation—transforming everyday restraints into purposeful, vowed practice.
