The Episode of Vena: Pṛthu’s Counsel, Royal Proclamation, and Brahmā’s Boon
tapasā tasya vai tuṣṭo brahmā pṛthumuvāca ha | tapastapasi kasmāttvaṃ tanme tvaṃ kāraṇaṃ vada
Brahmā
Concept: Austerity is evaluated by intention; even when tapas is powerful, the deity asks for its purpose—tapas must serve dharma, not ego.
Application: Before undertaking vows/fasts, articulate a dharmic aim (self-purification, service, restraint) rather than mere achievement or display.
Primary Rasa: adbhuta

Brahmā is speaking, and he addresses King Pṛthu.
The verse highlights that austerity (tapas) should be purposeful; Brahmā asks for the intention behind the practice rather than praising effort alone.
It frames tapas as a disciplined act within dharma that requires a clear motive—such as welfare, righteous duty, or spiritual realization—rather than being performed without discernment.
