मार्कण्डेयं महात्मानं पूर्वं भृगुकुलोद्वहम् ।

तमहं पृष्टवान् प्राप्य सन्देहान् भरतं प्रति ॥

మునుపు నేను మహాత్ముడైన మార్కండేయుని—భృగు వంశంలోని ప్రముఖ వంశధరుని—కలుసుకొని, భారతము (దేశం/జనం) గురించి నాకు ఉన్న సందేహాలను ఆయనను అడిగాను.
