Educational Q&A

Victory is portrayed as contingent on the opponent’s vulnerability: when people are weakened by suffering, overwhelmed by grief, and lacking allies, they become conquerable. The verse highlights the ethical and strategic weight of solidarity—friends and support are protective forces.

Vaiśampāyana, as narrator, states an evaluative judgment about when an adversary can be defeated: during a period of distress, grief, and isolation from allies. It frames the situation in terms of morale and support networks rather than mere physical strength.
