Educational Q&A

As a colophon, the verse itself teaches by framing: it signals that the preceding dialogue and episode should be read as a coherent ethical unit—highlighting how dharma (especially generosity and honor) can carry grave personal costs, and how choices made in virtue may still intensify the tragic momentum toward war.

This line closes the chapter and identifies its placement: in the Vana Parva, within the Kuṇḍalāharaṇa episode, during the dialogue between Sūrya and Karṇa. It functions as an editorial/narrative marker rather than advancing plot directly.
