परिव्राजक-आचारः (Conduct of the Wandering Renunciant) — Mahābhārata, Śānti-parva 269

स्यूमरश्मिरु्वाच भवन्तो ज्ञाननिष्ठा वै गृहस्था: कर्मनिश्चया: । आश्रमाणां च सर्वेषां निष्ठायामैक्यमुच्यते,स्यूमरश्मिने पूछा--भगवन्‌! आप तो ज्ञाननिष्ठ हैं और गृहस्थलोग कर्मनिष्ठ होते हैं; परंतु आप इस समय निष्ठामें सभी आश्रमोंकी एकताका प्रतिपादन कर रहे हैं। इस प्रकार ज्ञान और कर्मकी एकता और पृथकृता-दोनोंका भ्रम होनेसे इनका ठीक-ठीक अन्तर समझमें नहीं आता है। इसलिये आप मुझे उसे यथोचित एवं यथार्थरीतिसे बतानेकी कृपा करें

syūmarśmir uvāca—bhavanto jñānaniṣṭhā vai gṛhasthāḥ karmaniścayāḥ | āśramāṇāṃ ca sarveṣāṃ niṣṭhāyām aikyam ucyate | syūmarśmiṇe pṛcchā—bhagavan! āp to jñānaniṣṭhā hain aur gṛhastha-log karmaniṣṭha hote hain; parantu āp is samay niṣṭhā meṃ sabhī āśramoṃ kī ekatā kā pratipādan kar rahe hain | is prakār jñāna aur karma kī ekatā aur pṛthaktā—donoṃ kā bhram hone se in kā ṭhīk-ṭhīk antar samajh meṃ nahīṃ ātā | isliye āp mujhe use yathocit evaṃ yathārtha rīti se batāne kī kṛpā kareṃ |

స్యూమరశ్మి పలికెను—“భగవన్! మీరు జ్ఞాననిష్ఠులు; గృహస్థులు కర్మనిష్ఠులు. అయినా ఇప్పుడు నిష్ఠ విషయమున అన్ని ఆశ్రమములకును ఏకత్వమని మీరు ప్రకటిస్తున్నారు. దీని వలన జ్ఞానము మరియు కర్మము ఒకటేనా, వేరేనా అనే భ్రమ కలుగుచున్నది. కావున దయచేసి యథోచితముగా, యథార్థముగా నాకు వివరించండి.”
