ब्रह्मोवाच नैतत्‌ ते साधु मघवन्‌ यदेनमनुपृच्छसि । पृष्टस्तु नानृतं ब्रूयात्‌ तस्माद्‌ वक्ष्यामि ते बलिम्‌,ब्रद्माजीने कहा--मघवन्‌! यह तुम्हारे लिये अच्छी बात नहीं है कि तुम मुझसे बलिका पता पूछ रहे हो। पूछनेपर झूठ नहीं बोलना चाहिये, इसलिये मैं तुमसे बलिका पता बता रहा हूँ

brahmovāca naitat te sādhu maghavan yadenam anupṛcchasi | pṛṣṭas tu nānṛtaṃ brūyāt tasmād vakṣyāmi te balim ||

బ్రహ్ముడు పలికెను—మఘవన్! ఈ విధముగా అతని విషయమై నన్ను ప్రశ్నించుట నీకు శోభనము కాదు. అయితే అడిగినపుడు అసత్యము పలకరాదు; అందుచేత నీకు బలియొక్క సంగతి చెప్పుదును.
