गोमूल्यनिर्णयः — The Determination of Value through the Cow

ज्यायांसमपि शीलेन विहीनं नैव पूजयेत्‌ । अपि शूद्रं च धर्मज्ञं सदवृत्तमभिपूजयेत्‌,ऊँची जातिका मनुष्य भी यदि उत्तम शील अर्थात्‌ आचरणसे हीन हो तो उसका सत्कार न करे और शूद्र भी यदि धर्मज्ञ एवं सदाचारी हो तो उसका विशेष आदर करना चाहिये इति श्रीमहाभारते अनुशासनपर्वणि दानधर्मपर्वणि विवाहधर्मे वर्णसंकरक थने अष्टचत्वारिंशो5ध्याय:

bhīṣma uvāca | jyāyāṁsam api śīlena vihīnaṁ naiva pūjayet | api śūdraṁ ca dharmajñaṁ sadavṛttam abhipūjayet |

భీష్ముడు పలికెను—ఉన్నత స్థితి గలవాడైనా శీలహీనుడైతే అతనిని పూజించకూడదు; శూద్రుడైనా ధర్మజ్ఞుడై సద్వృత్తుడైతే అతనిని విశేషంగా గౌరవించాలి.

Educational Q&A

Honor should be based on character (śīla) and knowledge of dharma, not merely on birth or social rank. A high-born person lacking good conduct is not worthy of respect, while a Shudra who is dharma-knowing and well-behaved deserves special honor.

In Anuśāsana Parva, Bhishma instructs Yudhiṣṭhira on dharma. Here he lays down a norm for social and ethical judgment: reverence is to be given according to virtue and righteous conduct rather than inherited status.
