sudhanvā khaṇḍaparaśur dāruṇo draviṇapradaḥ | divispṛk sarvadṛg vyāso vācaspatir ayonijaḥ ||

Bhīṣma said: He is Sudhanvā, the supremely excellent bearer of the mighty bow; He is Khaṇḍaparaśu, the wielder of the axe who cuts down foes—manifest as Paraśurāma; He is Dāruṇa, terrifying to those who oppose the righteous path; He is Draviṇaprada, the giver of wealth to devotees who seek support. He pervades up to heaven (Divispṛk); He is Sarvadṛk, the all-seeing; He is Vyāsa, the arranger and divider of the Veda; and He is Vācaspati, lord of speech and knowledge, self-manifest and not born from a womb. In ethical sense, the verse praises the Divine as both protector and benefactor of the dharmic, and as a formidable corrective force against adharma.

Educational Q&A

The Divine is portrayed as simultaneously beneficent and corrective: granting prosperity to sincere seekers, seeing all actions, sustaining cosmic order up to the heavens, and becoming fearsome toward those who resist the righteous path. The many names teach that one ultimate reality supports dharma through multiple functions and manifestations.

Bhīṣma continues a hymn-like enumeration of exalted names and attributes of the Supreme (in a Viṣṇu/Nārāyaṇa-centered praise), identifying Him with renowned figures such as Paraśurāma and Vyāsa and with cosmic qualities like omniscience and self-manifestation.
