Dāna-Śreṣṭhatā: On the Superiority of Giving
Maitreya–Vyāsa Exemplum
कीड़ेने कहा--महामते! यह जो बहुत बड़ी बैलगाड़ी आ रही है, इसीकी घर्घराहट सुनकर मुझे भय हो गया है; क्योंकि उसकी यह आवाज बड़ी भयंकर है ।।
kīṭa uvāca—mahāmate! iyaṃ yā mahāśakaṭī samāyāti, tasyā ghoṣaṃ śrutvā me bhayaṃ jātaṃ; bhīṣaṇo hy eṣā ninādaḥ. śrūyate na ca māṃ hanyād iti hāsmād apakrame. śvasatāṃ ca śṛṇomy enaṃ goputrāṇāṃ pratodyatām.
కీటకము పలికెను—ఓ మహామతీ! ఈ మహా ఎద్దుల బండీ ఇటువైపు వస్తోంది. దాని ఘర్ఘర ధ్వని విని నాకు భయం పట్టుకుంది; ఆ శబ్దం ఎంతో భయంకరమైనది. అది చెవిలో పడగానే ‘ఇది వచ్చి నన్ను తొక్కి చంపకూడదే!’ అనే సందేహం కలుగుతుంది; అందుకే నేను తొందరగా దారి విడిచి పారిపోతున్నాను. చూడండి, ఎద్దులపై కొరడా పడుతోంది; వారు భారమైన బరువును మోస్తూ ఊపిరాడక హాపుతూ ఇటువైపు వస్తున్నారు. వారి శబ్దం నాకు చాలా దగ్గరగా వినిపిస్తోంది; బండిపై కూర్చున్న మనుషుల నానావిధ మాటలూ నా చెవులకు చేరుతున్నాయి.
