ययातिरुवाच इमं भौम॑ नरकं क्षीणपुण्य: प्रवेष्टमुर्वी गगनाद्‌ विप्रहीण: । उतक्त्वाहं व: प्रपतिष्याम्यनन्तरं त्वरन्ति मां लोकपा ब्रह्मणो ये,ययातिने कहा--मैं अपने पुण्यका क्षय होनेसे भौम नरकमें प्रवेश करनेके लिये आकाशसे गिर रहा हूँ। ब्रह्माजीके जो लोकपाल हैं, वे मुझे गिरनेके लिये जल्दी मचा रहे हैं; अतः आपलोगोंसे पूछकर विदा लेकर इस पृथ्वीपर गिरूँगा

yayātir uvāca: imaṃ bhaumaṃ narakaṃ kṣīṇapuṇyaḥ praveṣṭum urvīṃ gaganād viprahīṇaḥ | utaktvāhaṃ vaḥ prapatiṣyāmy anantaraṃ tvaranti māṃ lokapā brahmaṇo ye ||

యయాతి అన్నాడు—నా పుణ్యం క్షీణించింది; అందువల్ల ఉన్నత లోకాల హక్కు కోల్పోయి, ఆకాశం నుంచి పడుతూ ఈ భౌమ నరకంలో ప్రవేశించబోతున్నాను. బ్రహ్మదేవుని లోకపాలకులు నన్ను త్వరపెడుతున్నారు—కాబట్టి మీ అనుమతి తీసుకొని నేను వెంటనే భూమిపై పడిపోతాను।

Educational Q&A

Even heavenly attainments are not permanent: when accumulated merit (puṇya) is exhausted, one must fall back into suffering. The verse underscores karmic accountability and the impermanence of reward without enduring dharma.

Yayāti announces that his merit has run out and that he is being compelled by Brahmā’s world-guardians to descend from the heavens into an ‘earthly hell’—i.e., a painful fall to the mortal world—after taking leave of those present.
