Educational Q&A

The verse emphasizes moral causality and self-responsibility: human beings become bound to happiness and sorrow through their own inner faults (ātma-doṣa). It points away from blaming fate or others and toward ethical self-examination as the root of one’s experience.

In a moment of emotional intensity, a character embraces another and speaks while grieving. The speech frames the situation ethically, interpreting the unfolding pain and pleasure as consequences shaped by personal shortcomings rather than mere external circumstance.
