Garuḍa’s Birth and Vinatā’s Enslavement

A small, seemingly harmless question can become morally weighty when it is tied to pride, rivalry, or a wager. The passage foregrounds the ethics of speech—truthfulness, careful assertion, and the danger of being drawn into impulsive claims that later force unethical choices.
After the emergence of the divine horse Uccaiḥśravā during the churning of the ocean, Kadrū turns to her co-wife Vinatā and presses her to state the horse’s color quickly. This question initiates the famous dispute that will lead to a wager and Vinatā’s eventual bondage, setting the stage for later events involving Garuḍa.
