Adhyāya 196: Droṇa’s Conciliatory Counsel and Karṇa’s Suspicion of Counsel

evam ete pāṇḍavāḥ sambabhūvuḥ ye te rājan pūrvam indrā babhūvuḥ | lakṣmīś ca eṣāṃ pūrvam evopadiṣṭā bhāryā yaiṣā draupadī divyarūpā ||

Educational Q&A

The verse frames extraordinary events as arising from both human action (yajña/ritual) and divine sanction. It emphasizes that cosmic roles—like the Pāṇḍavas’ divine identity and Draupadī’s destined marriage—are part of a larger dharmic order, not merely personal choice or ritual technique.

Vyāsa explains to the king that the Pāṇḍavas have manifested with divine identity (as former Indras) and that Draupadī is Lakṣmī-like and preordained as their wife. The surrounding context underscores that her wondrous appearance from the sacrificial altar implies the gods’ cooperation beyond ordinary ritual causality.
