वैशम्पायन उवाच बभूव ब्राह्मण: कश्रिन्माण्डव्य इति विश्रुत: । धृतिमान्‌ सर्वधर्मज्ञ: सत्ये तपसि च स्थित:,वैशम्पायनजीने कहा--राजन्‌! पूर्वकालमें माण्डव्य नामसे विख्यात एक ब्राह्मण थे, जो धैर्यवान्‌ू, सब धर्मोके ज्ञाता, सत्यनिष्ठ एवं तपस्वी थे

Vaiśampāyana uvāca: babhūva brāhmaṇaḥ kaścin Māṇḍavya iti viśrutaḥ | dhṛtimān sarvadharmajñaḥ satye tapasi ca sthitaḥ ||

వైశంపాయనుడు చెప్పెను— “ఓ రాజా! పూర్వకాలంలో మాండవ్యుడని ప్రసిద్ధుడైన ఒక బ్రాహ్మణుడు ఉండెను; అతడు ధైర్యవంతుడు, సమస్త ధర్మములను తెలిసినవాడు, సత్యనిష్ఠుడు, తపస్సులో స్థిరుడై ఉండెను.”
