Avimukta-Māhātmya — Vyāsa in Vārāṇasī and Śiva’s Secret Teaching of Liberation
एतद् रहस्यं वेदानां पुराणानां च सुव्रताः / अविमुक्ताश्रयं ज्ञानं न कश्चिद् वेत्ति तत्त्वतः
etad rahasyaṃ vedānāṃ purāṇānāṃ ca suvratāḥ / avimuktāśrayaṃ jñānaṃ na kaścid vetti tattvataḥ
Sūta (narrator) conveying the teaching of the sages on Avimukta
Primary Rasa: adbhuta
Secondary Rasa: shanta
It implies that liberating knowledge is an esoteric “rahasya” and cannot be grasped superficially; true realization (tattvataḥ) requires the proper foundation—here symbolized by Avimukta as a locus of awakened insight.
The verse stresses qualification and inner preparedness (suvrata—disciplined vows) for receiving jñāna; in Kurma Purana’s broader teaching, such discipline aligns with Śaiva-Pāśupata oriented sādhanā—purification, restraint, and contemplation leading to tattva-jñāna.
By treating Avimukta (a Śaiva sacred center) as the ground of the highest jñāna while affirming Vedic-Purāṇic authority, it reflects the Purāṇa’s synthetic approach where sectarian boundaries yield to a shared non-dual pursuit of liberation.
