FAQs

It gives samskāra-kāla (ritual timing) rules: cūḍā-karman follows family custom, and a Brāhmaṇa’s upanayana is prescribed by specific age-counts—primarily the 8th year (from conception or from birth), with an allowance up to the 11th year from conception.

Alongside theology and myth, the Agni Purana also preserves practical dharma-shastra material—codifying life-cycle rites (saṃskāras), age calculations, and customary exceptions—showing its function as a compendium of ritual, social, and legal norms.

Performing saṃskāras at the proper time is treated as purificatory and dharma-supporting: it formally qualifies the initiate for Vedic study and disciplined conduct, and is believed to sustain merit (puṇya) through correct observance of prescribed rites.
