Related Themes: Agni Purana 293 (phonetics and grammatical categorization)
It imparts Vyākaraṇa/Śikṣā-style technical classification of Sanskrit sounds: the consonant varga-s are mapped to a fourfold scheme, the fifth row is treated as neuter, and the vowels are given a traditional technical designation.
Beyond mythology and ritual, the Agni Purana includes compact instructional material on language-science—here, a systematic note on phonetic/grammatical categorization of letters—showing its coverage of śāstric topics like grammar alongside dharma and worship.
Correct knowledge of sounds and their classification supports accurate recitation (śabda-śuddhi) of mantras and texts; such precision is traditionally held to preserve the efficacy and merit (puṇya) of sacred utterance.
