Praṇava-Māhātmya and the Twofold Mantra (Sūkṣma–Sthūla) in Śaiva Sādhanā
नंदिसंस्थानतः पश्चान्न विदुः शिववैभवम् । नंदीश्वरो बहिस्तिष्ठन्पंचाक्षरमुपासते
naṃdisaṃsthānataḥ paścānna viduḥ śivavaibhavam | naṃdīśvaro bahistiṣṭhanpaṃcākṣaramupāsate
நந்தியின் நிலையத்திற்கு வெளியே நிற்போர் சிவனின் வைபவத்தை உண்மையாக அறியார். ஆகையால் நந்தீஸ்வரர் வெளியே நின்று பஞ்சாக்ஷர மந்திரத்தால் ஆண்டவனை உபாசிக்கிறார்।

Sthala Purana: In the Kāśī precinct, Nandin’s station marks the liminal point of access: devotion at Nandi’s threshold is presented as the proper orientation for entering Śiva’s mystery; without that ‘inside’ stance, Śiva’s vaibhava remains unknown.
Significance: Honoring Nandi and aligning oneself in service (sevā-bhāva) is taught as a prerequisite for deeper liṅga-darśana and inner comprehension of Śiva’s glory.
Mantra: नमः शिवाय
Type: panchakshara
It teaches that Śiva’s true greatness is realized through nearness in devotion—humble service and unwavering mantra-upāsanā—exemplified by Nandī, the ideal Śaiva attendant.
Nandī’s “standing outside” reflects the temple posture of the devotee facing the Liṅga/Saguna Śiva; through Pañcākṣara japa, one approaches the Lord’s accessible form while moving toward inner realization of His supreme nature.
Daily Pañcākṣara japa (“Namaḥ Śivāya,” traditionally with praṇava as “Oṁ Namaḥ Śivāya”) with a stance of reverence and service—such as facing the Śiva-liṅga, maintaining purity, and steady contemplation.
