The verse highlights the Shaiva ethic of humble inquiry (jijñāsā) before a realized sage and affirms that honoring the Pitṛs is a dharmic foundation that supports higher Shiva-bhakti and inner purification.
Though it is a narrative question, it frames the proper approach to Saguna Shiva teachings: respectful listening to the guru-like sage, through whom the Purana’s accounts of Shiva’s līlā and linga-worship are transmitted.
The implied practice is śravaṇa (devotional listening) with humility, supported by Pitṛ-tarpaṇa and ancestral rites as part of dharma; these stabilize the mind for mantra-japa such as the Panchākṣarī, “Om Namaḥ Śivāya.”
