The Yayāti Episode

with the Glory of Mātā–Pitṛ Tīrtha

त्वया धर्मं न प्रवृत्तमभाष्योसि न संशयः । भवता नाशिताज्ञा मे महादंडेन घातिनः

tvayā dharmaṃ na pravṛttamabhāṣyosi na saṃśayaḥ | bhavatā nāśitājñā me mahādaṃḍena ghātinaḥ

நீ தர்மத்தைச் செயல்படுத்தவில்லை—இதில் ஐயமில்லை; மேலும் நீ நியாயவாதத்தால் உணர்வதற்குரியவனும் அல்ல. நீ என் ஆணையை அழித்து, மகாதண்டத்தால் தாக்குகிறாய்।

Unspecified (context needed to identify the speaker within the Adhyaya’s dialogue)

Concept: Dharma collapses when commands and social order are destroyed; daṇḍa (punitive force) is invoked to restrain the ungovernable.

Application: Before enforcing discipline, verify facts and motives; if you are the accused, recognize how defiance of legitimate authority escalates conflict and seek dialogue early.

Primary Rasa: raudra

Secondary Rasa: bhayanaka

Visual Art Cues: {"scene_description":"A furious authority figure stands with a raised staff, eyes blazing, as the accused recoils amid scattered symbols of broken command—splintered seal, toppled decree-stand, and startled guards. The scene crackles with the danger of unchecked force and the looming collapse of order.","primary_figures":["Unspecified speaker (wrathful authority figure)","accused figure (possibly Yadu or another court actor)","guards","scribes"],"setting":"palace courtyard or judgment hall with broken royal insignia, fallen scroll-stand, tense guards gripping spears","lighting_mood":"thunder","color_palette":["storm gray","blood red","iron black","ochre","cold silver"],"tanjore_prompt":"Tanjore painting style: wrathful judge/king with raised daṇḍa, dramatic posture, gold leaf highlighting the staff and royal insignia, deep reds and blacks, ornate yet tense composition, shattered seal and scattered scrolls rendered with jewel-like detail to emphasize ‘ājñā-nāśa’.","pahari_prompt":"Pahari miniature style: dynamic moment of accusation, fine brushwork capturing anger in the eyes, cool storm palette, guards in diagonal arrangement, broken decree-stand and scattered papers, restrained elegance contrasting with intense emotion.","kerala_mural_prompt":"Kerala mural style: bold outlines and fierce expressions, raised staff central, guards flanking symmetrically, strong red/yellow/green pigments with dark accents, mural-like intensity conveying raudra rasa and the moral peril of daṇḍa.","pichwai_prompt":"Pichwai cloth painting style: dramatic court scene framed by dense floral borders; stormy indigo background with gold highlights, symbolic broken insignia, peacocks startled and wings half-open, decorative motifs intensifying the sense of cosmic disorder when dharma is not ‘set in motion’."}

Audio Atmosphere: {"recitation_mood":"dramatic","suggested_raga":"Bhairavi","pace":"fast-dramatic","voice_tone":"authoritative","sound_elements":["staff strike","thunder rumble","guards’ armor clink","sudden silence after accusation"]}

Sandhi Resolution Notes: प्रवृत्तमभाष्योसि = प्रवृत्तम् + अभाष्यः + असि; नाशिताज्ञा = नाशित + आज्ञाः (दीर्घ-सन्धि); (पाठे) घातिनः इति बहुवचन-प्रथमा।

FAQs

It condemns obstructing dharma and portrays the moral failure of violating rightful commands through violence or coercion.

It links force (“mahādaṇḍa”) with the destruction of legitimate order (“ājñā”), implying that power without dharma becomes oppressive.

The speaker cannot be reliably identified from the single verse alone; the surrounding verses of Bhūmi-khaṇḍa 2.78 are needed to determine the dialogue participants.
