Adhyaya 38 — Dattatreya on Non-Identification (Mamata) and the Path to Liberation
यस्मिन् यस्मिन्ममासक्ता बुद्धिः पुंसः प्रजायते ।
ततस्ततः समादाय दुःखान्येव प्रयच्छति ॥
yasmin yasmin mamāsaktā buddhiḥ puṃsaḥ prajāyate |
tatastataḥ samādāya duḥkhānyeva prayacchati ||
எந்த எந்த பொருளில் மனிதனின் மனம் ‘என்னுடையது’ என்ற உணர்வுடன் பற்றிக்கொள்கிறதோ, அதே மூலத்திலிருந்து அவன் துயரங்களையே சேர்த்து அனுபவிக்கிறான்।

The verse gives a diagnostic rule: wherever ‘mine’ arises, vulnerability to loss, fear, and grief follows. Ethical practice is to reduce possessiveness rather than merely rotate possessions.

‘Mine-ness’ is an extension of ‘I’-sense; it is the subtle mechanism by which the Self is superimposed onto non-self, producing bondage.
