वैशम्पायन उवाच एवं बहुविधैर्वाक्यैर्याच्यमान: स तु द्विज: । कर्णेन भरतश्रेष्ठ नान्यं वरमयाचत,वैशम्पायनजी कहते हैं--भरतश्रेष्ठ) इस प्रकार बहुत-सी बातें कहकर कर्णके प्रार्थना करनेपर भी उन ब्राह्मणदेवने दूसरा कोई वर नहीं माँगा
vaiśampāyana uvāca evaṃ bahuvidhair vākyair yācyamānaḥ sa tu dvijaḥ | karṇena bharataśreṣṭha nānyaṃ varam ayācata ||
வைசம்பாயனன் கூறினான்—“பாரதர்களில் சிறந்தவனே! கர்ணன் பலவகைச் சொற்களால் வேண்டினாலும், அந்தப் பிராமணன் வேறு எந்த வரத்தையும் கேட்கவில்லை.”
