Mārkaṇḍeya uvāca | gurubhir aniyamair yukto bharato nāma pāvakaḥ | agniḥ puṣṭimatir nāma tuṣṭaḥ puṣṭiṃ prayacchati | bharaty eṣa prajāḥ sarvās tato bharata ucyate |
மார்க்கண்டேயர் கூறினார்— யுதிஷ்டிரா! ‘பரத’ எனப்படும் ஒரு பாவக அக்னி உண்டு; அவன் கனமான நியமங்களாலும் கடுமையான விரத-ஒழுக்கங்களாலும் கட்டுப்பட்டவன். அவன் திருப்தியடைந்தால் புஷ்டி, செழிப்பு அளிப்பான்; ஆகவே அவனுக்கு ‘புஷ்டிமதி’ என்ற பெயரும் உண்டு. எல்லாப் பிரஜைகளையும் தாங்கி வளர்ப்பதால் அவன் ‘பரத’ என அழைக்கப்படுகிறான்।
