न ज्ञातिभ्यो दया यस्य शुक्लदेहोडविकल्मष: । हिंसा सा तपसस्तस्य नानाशित्वं तप: स्मृतम्‌

na jñātibhyo dayā yasya śukla-deho 'davikalmaṣaḥ | hiṃsā sā tapasas tasya nānāśitvaṃ tapaḥ smṛtam ||

யுதிஷ்டிரன் கூறினான்—விரதம், உபவாசம் முதலியவற்றால் உடலை வெளிப்புறமாகத் தூய்மைப்படுத்தி, பலவகைப் பாவச் செயல்களையும் தவிர்த்தாலும், தன் சொந்த உறவினர்மீது கருணை எழாதவனின் அந்தக் கடினம் வன்முறையாகி அவன் தவத்தை அழிக்கிறது. உணவை மட்டும் விட்டு விடுதலே தவமன்று.
