Akṛtavraṇa’s Account

जहीमां मातरं पापां मा च पुत्र व्यथां कृथा: । तत आदाय परशुं रामो मातु: शिरोड5हरत्‌,“बेटा! अपनी इस पापिनी माताको अभी मार डालो और इसके लिये मनमें किसी प्रकारका खेद न करो।' तब परशुरामजीने फरसा लेकर उसी क्षण माताका मस्तक काट डाला

akṛtavraṇa uvāca | jahīmāṃ mātaraṃ pāpāṃ mā ca putra vyathāṃ kṛthāḥ | tata ādāya paraśuṃ rāmo mātuḥ śiro 'harat ||

அக்ருதவ்ரணன் கூறினான்— “மகனே! உன் இந்தப் பாவினி தாயை உடனே கொன்று விடு; மனத்தில் சிறிதும் துயரம் கொள்ளாதே.” அப்போது ராமன் (பரசுராமன்) கோடாரியை எடுத்துக் கொண்டு உடனே தாயின் தலையை வெட்டினான்।

Educational Q&A

The verse foregrounds a harsh dharmic dilemma: obedience to an authoritative command is presented as requiring the suppression of personal grief and ordinary moral hesitation. It invites reflection on when (or whether) duty and obedience can justify extreme violence, and how ‘dharma’ can be invoked to override compassion.

Akṛtavraṇa instructs his son to kill his (the son’s) mother without remorse. Rāma (Paraśurāma) immediately takes up an axe and severs his mother’s head, showing instantaneous compliance with the command.
