Kṛṣṇa’s Ethical Counsel to Duryodhana
tasmāt tvam api gāndhāre māna-krodhaṃ ca varjaya | sandhatsva pāṇḍavair vīra saṃrambhaṃ tyaja pārthiva ||
The verse teaches self-restraint as a prerequisite for righteous political action: abandon māna (pride) and krodha (anger), and give up saṃrambha (rash aggression). Only then can reconciliation (sandhi) with the Pāṇḍavas be pursued, preventing adharma-driven war.
Nārada is delivering admonitory counsel in the Udyoga Parva’s pre-war context, urging the Kuru side—addressing Gandhārī and the king—to drop hostile passions and to seek peace with the Pāṇḍavas rather than escalating toward conflict.
