जनमेजय उवाच उदपानं कथं ब्रह्मन् कथं च सुमहातपा: । पतित: कि च संत्यक्तो भ्रातृभ्यां द्विजसत्तम
janamejaya uvāca | udapānaṁ kathaṁ brahman kathaṁ ca sumahātapāḥ | patitaḥ kiṁ ca saṁtyakto bhrātṛbhyāṁ dvijasattama, etad ācakṣva me brahman śrotavyaṁ yadi manyase |
ஜனமேஜயன் கேட்டான்—பிராமணரே! அந்த உதபானம் எவ்வாறு தீர்த்தமாக ஆனது? மேலும் அந்த மிகுந்த தவவலிமை உடையவர் எவ்வாறு அதில் விழுந்தார்? இருமுறை பிறந்தோரில் சிறந்தவரே! அவருடைய இரு சகோதரர்கள் ஏன் அவரை அங்கே கைவிட்டனர்—எந்த காரணத்தால் கிணற்றில் விட்டுவிட்டு வீட்டிற்குச் சென்றனர்? பிராமணரே, இது கேட்கத் தகுந்தது என நீங்கள் கருதினால், இந்த நிகழ்வை எனக்குச் சொல்லுங்கள்.
