Tattva Level: pasha

Jyotirlinga: Viśvanātha

Sthala Purana: Within the Kāśī-centered discourse, the verse generalizes Kali-yuga degeneration: artha (wealth), vidyā (learning), and even dharma-kathā become instruments of ego and decline unless anchored in devotion and right conduct before Viśveśvara.

Significance: Kāśī is upheld as a place where dharma is restored by satsanga and Śiva-upāsanā; the warning implies that pilgrimage without transformation becomes mere performance.

Cosmic Event: Kali-yuga dharma-kṣaya: inversion of artha/vidyā/dharma into causes of bondage

FAQs

It warns that prosperity, learning, and even religious speech can become spiritually hollow when driven by ego and hypocrisy; true dharma in Shaiva thought is inner purity and surrender to Shiva (Pati), not mere social display.

It cautions that Linga worship must be performed with devotion (bhakti) and right conduct; otherwise, even ‘upāsanā’ becomes a mask—Saguna Shiva worship is meant to purify the heart and align one’s actions with dharma.

Practice sincere japa of the Panchakshara (“Om Namaḥ Śivāya”) with ethical restraint and humility; accompany external worship with inner repentance and truthfulness, rather than turning worship into mere performance or argument.
