The verse praises dhī (discernment): spiritual progress and worldly duties succeed when one chooses the right means and offers oneself for appropriate service, cultivating humility and readiness to act in harmony with dharma—an attitude aligned with Shaiva Siddhanta’s purification of the soul through right action.
In Saguna Shiva worship, devotion is expressed not only through ritual but through disciplined, effective dharmic action offered to Shiva. The spirit of “assign me what is fitting” mirrors a devotee’s sankalpa at the Linga—placing one’s capacities in Shiva’s service rather than acting from ego.
Adopt a daily practice of offering actions (kriyā) to Shiva: begin work after mentally chanting the Panchākṣarī “Om Namaḥ Śivāya,” and conclude by dedicating the results to Shiva; this reinforces discernment in choosing proper means and nurtures seva-bhāva.
